Recently, I had the pleasure of crafting a unique piece for a customer in Scotland. He envisioned a sturdy wooden bench with built-in planters for the front of his house, and I was thrilled to bring his vision to life.
The brief was simple: create a bench that would blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands. The customer also desired integrated planters to add a touch of greenery and floral charm to his entryway.
From Sketch to Reality
With the brief in mind, and the customers design. we wanted to capture the essence of the rustic aesthetic while ensuring the bench remained practical and comfortable. The final design incorporated thick wooden beams for a sturdy base.
I sourced locally-felled pine for the project, its natural grain and knots adding to the rustic character. Each piece was carefully cut and sanded to ensure a smooth yet charmingly weathered look. Once the bench was assembled, I moved on to the planters.
Planting the Perfect Touch
The planters were designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. I opted for a simple square & rectangular shape with drainage holes to ensure the well-being of the plants. To add a touch of rustic charm, I lined the insides with black landscaping fabric, creating a visible contrast against the light wood.
The final touches included staining the wood with sealant to protect it from the elements and enhance the natural grain.
A Bench Welcomed by Nature
The finished product was a charming and functional bench that perfectly captured the rustic elegance of the Scottish Highlands. The sturdy frame provided a comfortable seating area, while the integrated planters offered the perfect platform for a vibrant display of flowers and greenery.
The customer was absolutely delighted with the bench.
More Than Just a Bench
This project was more than just about building a piece of furniture. It was about collaborating with a customer to create something that was both beautiful and functional, and that reflected their unique sense of style and place. It was a privilege to be a part of bringing his vision to life, and I’m sure the bench will be a cherished part of his home for many years to come.
