Stepping into the Garden: Building Safe and Stylish Steps for Mum

I was recently contacted by a customer who wanted me to build a set of wooden garden steps with rails for her mother. Her mother loved spending time in the garden, but the uneven terrain was making it difficult for her to reach her favorite flower beds.

The customer wanted the steps to be safe and sturdy, but also stylish and in keeping with the overall look of the garden. We discussed different options for the design and materials, and eventually settled on a set of pressure-treated wooden steps with wooden rails.

Building the Steps

I was given the sizing’s from the customer for this build, so with sizes in hand I started to plan & build the steps. the steps also had to be removable so they had to be safe and sturdy when being used.

I started by making the support pieces for the steps to size, Making the two ends and then fastening these together.

Once the supports were in place, I cut the treads to size and attached them to the supports.

Finally, I installed the rails. I used wooden rails instead of attaching these to the side of the steps I cut holes out of the steps and inserted them in to the steps and then fastened these with bolts so that the rails would be sturdy when used, the steps where then stained and a slip proof striping put on to each step.

The Finished Product

The finished steps were beautiful and functional. They were sturdy enough to support the customer’s mother, and the rails provided her with extra stability. The pressure-treated wood & rails were also weather-resistant, so the steps will look good for years to come.

The customer was thrilled with the steps. Her mother was now able to safely and easily reach her favorite flower beds, and she could spend more time enjoying her garden.

A Touch of the Highlands: Rustic Bench with Built-In Planters

Recently, I had the pleasure of crafting a unique piece for a customer in Scotland. He envisioned a sturdy wooden bench with built-in planters for the front of his house, and I was thrilled to bring his vision to life.

The brief was simple: create a bench that would blend seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Scottish Highlands. The customer also desired integrated planters to add a touch of greenery and floral charm to his entryway.

From Sketch to Reality

With the brief in mind, and the customers design. we wanted to capture the essence of the rustic aesthetic while ensuring the bench remained practical and comfortable. The final design incorporated thick wooden beams for a sturdy base.

I sourced locally-felled pine for the project, its natural grain and knots adding to the rustic character. Each piece was carefully cut and sanded to ensure a smooth yet charmingly weathered look. Once the bench was assembled, I moved on to the planters.

Planting the Perfect Touch

The planters were designed to be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. I opted for a simple square & rectangular shape with drainage holes to ensure the well-being of the plants. To add a touch of rustic charm, I lined the insides with black landscaping fabric, creating a visible contrast against the light wood.

The final touches included staining the wood with sealant to protect it from the elements and enhance the natural grain.

A Bench Welcomed by Nature

The finished product was a charming and functional bench that perfectly captured the rustic elegance of the Scottish Highlands. The sturdy frame provided a comfortable seating area, while the integrated planters offered the perfect platform for a vibrant display of flowers and greenery.

The customer was absolutely delighted with the bench.

Storage Box with Back Rest & Wheels

I was recently commissioned to create a bespoke storage box with a back rest and wheels. The customer gave me the dimensions they wanted, and I was free to get creative with the design.

I decided to use pine for the construction of the box. It is a strong and durable material.

Once the box was assembled, I added the back rest. The back rest was also made from pine that is attached to the back of the box with screws. I then added the wheels. The wheels are casters, which means they swivel 360 degrees. This makes the box easy to move around.

The finished product is a beautiful and functional storage box. The customer was thrilled with it.

Below is the storage box that was made.

The Table I Made For My Dad

I’ve always loved working with wood, I must of got this from my Dad. So when my dad’s 70th birthday came around, I decided to make him a special gift: a table made from scratch.

I started by gathering the materials I needed. All the wood was recycled wood from skids and pallets, as I know my dad likes to use off cuts and recycled woods.

Once I had all the materials, I started building the table. I followed my plan that I draw up it had to be different from the normal type of table so instead of having 4 legs that went down to the floor i decided to make the lags of a 45 degree angle, I also added my own personal touches. For example, I carved the initials ‘HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY DAD’ into the a piece of wood and put this in the middle.

It took me a week to finish the table, but it was worth it. When I was finally done, I was really proud of my work. The table was sturdy and beautiful, and I knew that my dad would love it.

I gave the table to my dad on his 70th birthday, and he was absolutely thrilled. He said it was the best gift he had ever received.

I’m so glad that I was able to make my dad a special gift that he will cherish for years to come. It was a labour of love, and it was worth every minute.

Here are some of the things I learned while making the table:

  • It’s important to have a plan. Even if you’re not an experienced woodworker, you can still build a beautiful piece of furniture if you have a plan to follow.
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes when they’re learning something new. The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and keep going.
  • Take your time and enjoy the process. Building a piece of furniture is a rewarding experience, so don’t rush through it. Take your time and enjoy the process.

If you’re thinking about making a table for someone special, I encourage you to go for it. It’s a great way to show someone how much you care. And who knows, you might even learn something new along the way.
