I was recently contacted by a customer who wanted me to build a set of wooden garden steps with rails for her mother. Her mother loved spending time in the garden, but the uneven terrain was making it difficult for her to reach her favorite flower beds.
The customer wanted the steps to be safe and sturdy, but also stylish and in keeping with the overall look of the garden. We discussed different options for the design and materials, and eventually settled on a set of pressure-treated wooden steps with wooden rails.
Building the Steps
I was given the sizing’s from the customer for this build, so with sizes in hand I started to plan & build the steps. the steps also had to be removable so they had to be safe and sturdy when being used.
I started by making the support pieces for the steps to size, Making the two ends and then fastening these together.
Once the supports were in place, I cut the treads to size and attached them to the supports.
Finally, I installed the rails. I used wooden rails instead of attaching these to the side of the steps I cut holes out of the steps and inserted them in to the steps and then fastened these with bolts so that the rails would be sturdy when used, the steps where then stained and a slip proof striping put on to each step.
The Finished Product
The finished steps were beautiful and functional. They were sturdy enough to support the customer’s mother, and the rails provided her with extra stability. The pressure-treated wood & rails were also weather-resistant, so the steps will look good for years to come.
The customer was thrilled with the steps. Her mother was now able to safely and easily reach her favorite flower beds, and she could spend more time enjoying her garden.
